The Crucible

Opening in 1971, and renovated for its 40th anniversary in 2010, the Crucible is one of the most recognisable theatres in the city, if not the North of England. Seating 980 people, it boasts an aptly named ‘thrust stage’, and with that thrust the audience sit on three sides, meaning nobody is sat further than twenty-two metres away from the performance.

Despite being most notorious for the yearly exhibition of the World Snooker Championships, the Crucible is equally recognised for the infinite world class theatre productions that take over the complex weeks at a time.

Writers and readers have countless opportunities to get involved with the productions, with talkbacks, play reading groups and numerous workshops happening constantly throughout the year. The Crucible also works with Sheffield People’s Theatre, a programme designed to inspire the Sheffield community to get on and around the stage. A quick flick through the Sheffield Theatres news page is often enough to find an upcoming opportunity, whether you’re a writer, an actor or a stage designer.
