Poems On The Trams

Word Life delivered Poetry On The Trams in Sheffield as part of the Cultural Olympiad, the arts festival set up to complement London 2012. We commissioned five local writers – Helen Mort, Sally Goldsmith, Charlotte Ansell, James Lock and Ben Wilkinson – to create original work inspired by the theme of movement. The poems were displayed on the tram network from 30th August to 4th September. We were also featured on BBC Radio Sheffield, where project manager Joe Kriss was interviewed live on a tram and poet Helen Mort performed one of her poems. The project reached an estimated audience of 80,000 people. The aim of the project was to encourage an appreciation of poetry and reach new audiences who wouldn’t necessarily take part in other literature activities . We felt that the medium of a tram journey is the perfect place for a bit of quiet contemplation
